Does Test Prep Work? A week ago I happened to be interviewed by Chapel Hill highschool guidance counselor, Kristen Hiemstra.

You can listen to the full meeting by pressing here.

We covered a complete lot of topics anything shmoop.pro from why I think they ought to leave the vocabulary in the SAT as is, to whether I believe that test prep works. Among the many topics we talked about were:

  • Different kinds of test prep, which work and just why
  • Commercial test prep
  • Signs of good vs bad test prep
  • Just how to motivate a teenager
  • Just What the faculty Board is testing
  • The time that is best to tour colleges
  • Lessons I learned about the SAT
  • Lessons we discovered as a mom

We also talked about my future book, The Perfect get Project: Uncovering the Secrets of the SAT and what it’s all about.

How Much Does the SAT Count in the Admissions Decision?

So how much does the SAT Count in the Admissions Decision?

SAT counts to get more than colleges will acknowledge to and less than students think.

The Academic Index the AI Calculator should shed light on ‘how much’ the SAT counts. Although AI originated for athletes, they determine it for several students.

Never miss these Kitchen Table Math responses, which add more insight, including one commenter who discovered a (slightly old) College Board report that provides all kinds of information on the decision techniques utilized by many universities.

The first component is based on your SAT scores, the next part is based on your SAT II scores, and also the third part is founded on your GPA. The link above talks about a GPA dining table supplied to the eight universities, but it generally does not explain how the GPA is calculated. It appears to use a scale that is weighted the top score is 4.3. I haven’t found out how this number is calculated. The spreadsheet then proceeds to select the higher score connected with each of the two GPA numbers. It’s constantly struck me that the SAT scores make up two-thirds of the index. Colleges might include a fudge element if they know something in regards to a school that is high but no option for that shows up within the example spreadsheet.

Quadruplets’ Mom Needs SAT Advice

Dear Ms. Stier:

I recently found your site and it is loved by me! Thanks for carrying it out.

I could actually use some advise on how to approach SAT test prep for my quadruplets. [me: OMG]

I have 3 girls and 1 boy. They took the PSAT in sophomore 12 months and they will require the PSAT again this October.

Certainly one of the disadvantages of getting all my children the exact same age is that any mistakes we make affects all four. None of them benefit so I hope to get this as right as I can from me learning from my mistakes.

Do you might think I should have them study as being a small group together under my guidance (from experience it really is like wanting to herd cats); get a tutor for the four of them in a small group; have someone tutor them individually; or send them up to a SAT test prep center? Or perhaps a mixture of all of these? I must watch my costs too.

How do you find a tutor that is good? What’s the test prep company that is best?

If these are concerns I can be helped by you with i might appreciate it. If it’s not something that it is possible to help me then that is okay and I appreciate you taking time to read my email.

Thanks again for the info that is website

Sincerely,

Several Mom

Dear Multiple Mom,

My gut says to together do some work with all four (e.g. plenty of vocab, full training tests, and they can explain answers to each other because that is a great way to learn), and do some preparation separately. If you’re able to find a tutor( that is affordable), that’s the most efficient means.

Listed here are a few questions to ask a potential tutor (or test prep company):

1) Do you modify your approach and, if so, how?

2) exactly What’s your score that is average gain student? Many tutors will not respond to this concern because there are incredibly many variables that it’s almost maybe not fair to ask. Having said that, an excessive ‘average score gain’ should be a flag. e.g., 200 points in 30 days.

3) the length of time do you advise students to plan the SAT and how much does it cost? The answer that is right be individual and will depend on where the student begins and what the target is.

4) What test prep materials do you use? ( If it’s not College that is official Board, be wary.)

5) how homework that is much there be between sessions? (a tutor that is great have students do as much act as possible off the clock, such as vocab and practice tests.)

The step that is first to possess all four young ones take an official university Board practice SAT. You can use one through the College Board’s Blue Book, or a practice is had by the College Board test on its website.

You need to determine just what they need to work on and whether they need foundational work or more traditional test prep polish. My guess is as I did!) that they need foundational work, because so many kids do (and. Ensure you pick a tutor or test prep business who is able to assess that well!

Regarding test prep companies, we’d avoid anyone whom does not primarily utilize College Board material (that would include most/if not all large, brand-name test prep companies).
